Flora Fit was made for the UC Los Angeles 2024 hackathon. It was initially brought up by Audrey due to her love for plants, Pokemon GO, and our ecosystem. Built using React Native, we were able to build a fully functional “game” packed with features.
Flora Fit is more than just a game; it’s a journey into the heart of your local ecosystem. Inspired by apps like Pokémon GO and Pikmin Bloom, our app combines the joy of walking with the reflective practice of journaling. As you explore your surroundings, you’ll meet animated plant characters, “Sole Mates”, who guide you through beautiful landscapes, helping you learn about native species and the impact of invasive plants.
Figuring out how to get people out their couches and be more connected with nature. Something that is fun, educational, and grounds you to the present moment.
Although we did not win the hackathon, I believe that many of us learned something new. Using React Native is always going to bring surprises, but we were able to finish something that was interactive and functional. I was mostly proud of my accomplishments of working in the backend. I took inspiration from my time at Blueprint and Tech4Good from UC Santa Cruz. I took the OOP approach for building a robust and extendable backend.
